Stephen Lock - Artist Blacksmith

Learning the craft in South-East London on the banks of the river Thames, I draw my inspiration from the rich history of architectural and industrial design in London, and from the irregular beauty of natural forms.

I am lucky enough to work in a city that has the genius of great smiths sewn into the fabric of its architecture. Iron is vital to the landscape of London. Take away the boot-scrapers, balcony grilles, crested railings or pub signs, and the backdrop of our lives would change completely.
I work to bring together the ancient craft of blacksmithing and the reality of the modern day: the advances and the aesthetics we have achieved, and the challenges we face. I feel promoting a culture of long-lasting, locally and ethically made products is important, working with recycled wood and metal to turn scrap material into functional, beautiful objects that will not need to be replaced.

I take on large architectural ironwork; small, decorative and domestic products; fabrication and welding projects and one-of-a-kind, commissioned pieces.

I have had a passion for working with my hands from a young age, and my interest in history and fascination with the process of shaping metal naturally led to blacksmithing. I was taken on by Kevin Boys FWCB as an apprentice and after two and a half years was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. I also work as a glassblower at Dixon Science, creating glassware for laboratories, museums and other clients around the UK and abroad. The combination of the two mediums is something I am very excited to explore to a greater extent in the future.
